Mohammed Kudus and his release clause has been the topic of some conversation.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein was quizzed on Liverpool’s search for a wide player in one of his weekly Q & A sessions – sharing that he would be ‘surprised’ if Kudus was not on Liverpool’s radar.

Ornstein confirmed that Liverpool are indeed on the market for a winger while also stating that there was a release clause in the Ghanian’s contract.

Kudus has had a standout debut season at West Ham after his 2023 move from Ajax.

In 45 appearances across all competition this season, the 23-year-old has scored 17 goals and provided 6 assists.

He also performed impressively at the AFCON tournament with Ghana, although his team did not advance past the group stages earlier this year.

As a result of his performances and his Premier League-proven attributes, he has presumably been attracting attention from the likes of Liverpool and other top clubs.

This week, a report claimed that the Reds are ready to trigger an £85 million release clause in Kudus’s contract.

With Arne Slot coming in, a refreshed squad is needed for the 2024/25 season.

However, as Hammers News point out, those reports can be considered wide of the mark.

Why won’t Liverpool activate Mohammed Kudus’ release clause?

West Ham insider Sean Whetstone, who is thought to be a very reliable insider relating to the London club, as provided an update on the situation.

Of Kudus, he writes (via Hammers News):

“There has been much debate whether Hammer Mo Kudus has a release clause with club sources staying tight lipped on the subject,” Whetstone said.

“But West Ham fans should not despair as release clauses only activate after the third transfer window following their signing.”

“Meaning a release clause will not be active until July 2025 if one actually exists in the case of Kudus.”

Kudus is still young at 23 and has not reached his full potential, which is a scary prospect to think about.

But it seems that West Ham will be able to keep one of their star men this summer, although there is nothing to stop Liverpool from simply making a bid aside from trying to match the reported release clause.
