Jurgen Klopp made lots of changes to his side in the summer transfer window last year with a massive midfield rebuild, seeing five senior players leave, including the vice-captain and captain.
Four players were signed with Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai coming to the club in time for pre-season preparations so they could get right up to speed.
The two players that joined later on in the window were Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch as Klopp looked to complete the rebuild of his midfield.
One player who remained during the overhaul was Thiago Alcantara with the Spanish international hoping to return to the squad from injury in the pre-season.
He had barely featured during the run-in of the 2022/23 season after he started against Wolves in a 3-0 loss and suffered a hip flexor.
Thiago did return briefly for four games on the bounce as a substitute against Arsenal, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and then West Ham but then he was not seen again for the remainder of the run-in due to more hip problems.
The hope was that he would have surgery to overcome the persistent hip issues and that he would return in pre-season ready to settle into a new look midfield that Klopp had put together.
However we are now in the January transfer window and he has still not even made the bench once this season due to a setback he had with the problem.
The 32-year-old is in the last year of his contract on Merseyside and it does appear that he may be leaving at the end of his deal like James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain did last summer.
Brazilian side Flamengo are interested in bringing Thiago Alcantara to the club
Barcelona have been interested in bringing Thiago back to the club where he started his career as they scout the market for cheap options however a surprise club has now been mentioned regarding the future of the midfielder.
Brazilain side Flamengo have scouted the market for an opportunity and they believe Thiago is the right option for them as their manager Tite sees him as a formidable midfielder to sign.
Flamengo is looking for a midfielder to replace Giorgian Daniel De Arrascaeta as well as the departure of Everton Ribeiro who would play this role as playmaker and the possible negotiation involving Thiago Maia with Internacional, the club need new players in their midfield ranks.
They may have competition from Saudi Arabai with Al-Ettifaq supposedly showing an interest in him as well after they signed Jordan Henderson from Liverpool last summer.
According to this update on Thiago’s future Liverpool do not want to extend his current deal so that would leave any club free to sign him in the summer unless a sale for a fee was agreed now.
The hope for Klopp will now be that Thiago can return to full fitness within the next month and give him some games to help Liverpool compete for the four trophies on offer.
However he may not want to ruin any plans he has for a future club by making him pick up another injury by playing him so it is a tricky situation for the Spaniard right now.
