It is set to be a period of change and upheaval at Liverpool in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp will leave at the end of the season as he announced last month, with many of his staff following him out the exit door.

Jorg Schmadtke already departed the club at the end of the January transfer window, so a new sporting director is also needed.

Many have been confused as to why Liverpool are being linked to transfer targets despite no sporting director or manager in place for next.

This is because despite all the change and upheaval afoot, there are still those at Anfield doing due diligence in the transfer market.

The likes of head of recruitment Dave Fallows, chief scout Barry Hunter, or head data analyst Will Spearman will no doubt be hard at work preparing for the summer.

And it seems they have identified a potential midfield target for the summer.

Liverpool interested in Atalanta midfielder Ederson

Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport have come out with a report claiming that the ‘eyes of the Premier League’ are on Atalanta midfielder Ederson.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a strong season for the Bergamo side and is therefore drawing plenty of interest from the Premier League.

In Serie A this season, the Brazilian has made 23 appearances, contributing with five goals and one assist.

Ederson is a dynamic box-to-box midfielder who possess an impressive mix of physical and technical qualities.

Tiago Nunes, his former manager at Corinthians would go on to describe his playstyle to Sky Sports:

“He is a box-to-box player with the energy to keep going back and forth all the time,” Nunes began.

“My first impressions were of a player with a lot of strength, a lot of physical ability, a player who was a powerful striker on the ball, with good technique.”

“Basically, someone with characteristics that are difficult to find, especially in Brazilian football.”

“He has the ability and the physicality to handle the pace of the game,” Nunes explains.

“He is a very vertical player with a lot of pace in the final third of the pitch.”

“This is a player with very particular characteristics who can develop even more in a league as strong as the Premier League.”

Other Premier League interest

It’s not only Liverpool that are keen on Ederson, with Newcastle, Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United being named in the report.

Atalanta paid roughly €22 million to Salernitana for the services of Ederson in July 2022.

Therefore, the Serie A side are reportedly only willing to listen to offers in excess of €40m.

The Bergamo side have been very savvy in the transfer market in recent years, and are growing a reputation as a feeder to the biggest clubs in Europe.

Just this past summer, they sold Rasmus Højlund to Manchester United for a whopping €74 million.

They also sold Cristian Romero to Tottenham for €50 million in the summer of 2022.

It’s then fair to say that Atalanta will be tough negotiators if the Reds do come calling in the summer.
