Liverpool could raid Sunderland for 16-year-old teenage sensation Chris Rigg, who is having a breakout season in the Championship this term.
It was a quiet January transfer window for the Reds, with Jurgen Klopp and co. seemingly content with the squad in front of them.
Pep Ljinders previously hinted that due to the amount of money spent in the summer, any January business would be difficult.
However, it has not stopped the club from doing their due diligence for this coming transfer window and beyond.
The Sunderland Echo have come out with a report today claiming that teenage sensation Chris Rigg is the subject of interest of many clubs – both domestic and abroad.
They name Bayern Munich, both Manchester clubs, Chelsea, and Liverpool as being interested in the youngster.
Who is Chris Rigg?
Chris Rigg spent his whole youth career in the Sunderland academy.
Coaches were immediately drawn to him after seeing how well he performed in training and games.
Operating as either a box-to-box midfielder or as a No.6, Rigg seems to be an old-fashioned industrious midfielder.
He started training with the U21s at the start of the 2022–2023 campaign, where he quickly caught the eye of former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray.
Mowbray, who first brought him into the first team despite Rigg still being in school, had this to say about the youngster:
“He has this warrior-like character, a personality and internal mechanism,” Mowbray told BBC Radio Newcastle.
“He wants to win every tackle, every 5-a-side, every contest he’s in, which is pretty unique in a footballer.”
“I shouldn’t really say it, but it’s that Roy Keane-esque type of ‘nastiness’.”
“He’s a nice kid, but not so much of a nice kid when he’s got his boots on and is on the pitch.”
Sounds exactly like a Liverpool player if we are being honest, one that will get the Anfield crowd going when he fights for the ball.
Rigge became the youngest outfield player ever to feature for Sunderland after making his first team debut in the FA Cup last year.
This term, he has already 15 appearances for the Black Cats, with seven of those coming in the Championship.
While it remains to be seen whether Liverpool make a concerted effort to land the youngster, there’s no doubt he would be an excellent coup for the future.
