Like in every transfer window, Liverpool have been linked with several different players as the club are constantly scouting the market for any opportunities which may benefit them.
The most recent link has been with Swedish talent Momodou Sonko who is supposedly attracting interest from several clubs and even some ownership groups.
However, the problem Jurgen Klopp has had in recent games is in defence as his squad has been stretched in defence.
The biggest issue he has had is at left-back as Andy Robertson has been out of action for a long time due to an injury issue he suffered against Spain but he is expected to return to action sooner rather than later which will be a big boost for Liverpool
His back-up Kostas Tsimikas was playing well whilst covering for him and it appeared that The Reds didn’t need to worry about Robertson coming back in a hurry but he then got injured in the draw against Arsenal in the Premier League.
As well as this Klopp has to deal with not having Joel Matip and he will have to continue with that due to the fact it unfortunately looks like he will be out for the season.
Owen Beck has been recalled whilst Nat Phillips is also back after his short-term loan at Celtic but even though he is back for some cover in central defence Liverpool are reportedly looking at signing another defender.
Liverpool interested in Ko Itakura
According to a recent report Liverpool are looking at bringing in another Japanese international after they signed Wataru Endo in the summer.
Ko Itakura is the player that Liverpool are looking at as the 26-year-old has an exit clause in the summer which allows him to leave Borussia Monchengladbach for a fee between 10 and 15 million Euros.
They have competition for the 26-year-old though as Tottenham have reportedly been watching him during the same time period that Liverpool have.
Borussia Monchengladbach are looking to try and extended his contract so that they can keep him but if they do sell him it is for a bigger fee that what he is available for.
Itakura was a key man for them at the start of this season as he was their starting centre back but he suffered an ankle injury which has ruled him out of action since October.
The fact he can also play in midfield is a big reason why he may be attracting interest as he can be used to cover other players not just at the back.
Liverpool know that Matip will be out of contract at the end of this season and the club need to make a decision on his future so if they do not extend his deal they will have to look at bringing in another defender.
Another reason for that is the fact that Joe Gomez has excelled at full-back so far this season and it may be his position moving forward if Trent Alexander-Arnold continues his transition into midfield.
