Liverpool were crowned as Carabao Cup winners on Sunday as they defeated Chelsea courtesy of a Virgil van Dijk goal deep into stoppage time.

Plenty of Jurgen Klopp’s men stepped up to the plate at Wembley to ensure that the trophy returned to Anfield.

Ibrahima Konate was an absolute rock in the heart of defence, while Wataru Endo left the stadium on crutches after his marathon 120 minutes in Klopp’s engine room.

Caoimhin Kelleher too was immense in ensuring Liverpool kept the clean sheet, and made a whole host of saves including a one-on-one stop against Chelsea’s Connor Gallagher.

Kelleher played every minute of this Carabao campaign, and it will no doubt be a different feeling for Kelleher lifting a trophy as someone who played the games.

However, the Republic of Ireland international could find himself leaving Merseyside in the summer.

He has developed into a ‘keeper capable of being the No.1 at most Premier League sides but will never dislodge Alisson Becker as Liverpool’s No.1.

While Virgil van Dijk claimed that there is ‘no shame’ in being behind the pecking order to a goalkeeper like Alisson, it’s impacting his Ireland career.

Southhampton ‘keeper Gavin Bazunu has been preferred in recent months due to his consistent game time, albeit in the Championship with the Saints.

Kelleher, now 25, is getting to the age where he will want to be playing regular football at club level.

Manager Jurgen Klopp already admitted that, in the summer, he and Kelleher spoke about the keeper’s long-term future at the club.

The German was keen to keep hold of Kelleher as he helps fill home-grown quotas.

Celtic are rumoured to be big fans of the 25-year-old and sniffed around him in the summer.

Nevertheless, The Athletic’s James Pearce has provided his view on the situation.

What did Liverpool journalist James Pearce say about Caoimhin Kelleher?

Speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast, Pearce suggests that Kelleher departure will likely be forthcoming in the summer – while also revealing that the Reds would want something close to £30 million for their player:

“I would be surprised if Liverpool are able to keep hold of Kelleher for another season,” he began.

“He would’ve gone last summer, I think, if the right offer had come in. But there was a lot of interest.”

“There was loan offers that Liverpool were never, ever going to agree to because it just made no sense financially.”

“And then, of course, I think there was a £15 million bid from Forest in January that again, was far too late in the window and didn’t come close to meeting their valuation.”

“I think Liverpool view him as probably worth double that.”

“But there is an acceptance you can only keep hold of someone like him so long.”

Kelleher enhanced his legacy at Anfield with another Carabao Cup title to his name, and a cup campaign that he played a major role in.

While it would be sad to wave goodbye to the Irishman, he deserves to be playing week-in and week-out at a top club.
