As Liverpool prepare for the summer transfer window, the club is already being linked with several potential new signings.

However, the future at Anfield remains uncertain as Jurgen Klopp is set to bid farewell to Merseyside after nearly nine years in charge.

Feyenoord boss Arne Slot is poised to be named Klopp’s successor, although a formal announcement from the club is pending.

Despite the managerial transition, Liverpool are actively pursuing transfer targets.

Recent reports from across Europe have provided updates on their interest in Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

McCarthy, who delivered a standout performance for Southampton in their Championship playoff semi-final first-leg draw with West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, is set to become a free agent at the end of this campaign, catching the attention of several clubs.

The 34-year-old reclaimed his position in Southampton’s starting lineup following Gavin Bazunu’s Achilles tendon injury last month, and he has concluded the season in impressive form.

According to the Daily Mail, “Alex McCarthy is emerging as a summer option for Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic as well as Liverpool and Newcastle United.

“Celtic are on the look out for a goalkeeper with Joe Hart retiring at the end of the season.

“Liverpool and Newcastle United are also monitoring developments with McCarthy as they draw up shortlists for back-up keepers.”

McCarthy boasts extensive Premier League experience with Reading, QPR, Crystal Palace, and Southampton, and he is eager to make a return to top-flight football.

His immediate priority, though, is to help Southampton secure a swift return to the Premier League.

They are set to face West Brom in the playoff semi-final return leg on Friday, with a place in the final at stake.

The winners of this tie will go on to face the victors of the Leeds United vs. Norwich City clash on May 26.

The daily newspaper further stated that “Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher is looking to play more regular first-team football while Newcastle want to bring in Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale – though recognise he could prove expensive – and they have question marks over Martin Dubravka and Loris Karius.”

Third-choice goalkeeper Adrian is anticipated to depart this summer, despite having signed a new contract ahead of the 2023-24 season.

Given this, McCarthy could serve as an excellent replacement for the former West Ham shot-stopper.
