Liverpool and Manchester City have been competing with each other at the top end of the Premier League a lot under Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola as we have seen some insane title battles over the last six years.

City have beaten Liverpool to plenty of titles though unfortunately with Guardiola’s side edging them to two by just one point but Liverpool are looking to get one back on them this season as they sit top of the Premier League.

So we could be set for another classic battle between these two sides this season however the likes of Aston Villa, Arsenal and Aston Villa are all involved.

There could be a big battle between Liverpool and City off the pitch though as a recent report has linked them to a midfielder which could be the first time in recent years that both sides are looking at signing the same player.

Liverpool and Manchester City are keeping a close eye on Alan Varela

According to a report, the player that both sides are looking at potentially bringing to their clubs is midfielder Alan Varela who is from Argentina.

The 22-year-old is a defensive midfielder and only joined Portuguese giants Porto in the summer from Boca Juniors for a fee of around eight million euros with three million more in add-ons.

So far this season he has played 22 games in all competitions scoring one goal and getting two assist whilst also showing a true defensive midfielder trait as he has picked up six yellow cards.

He has been a key man for Sergio Coneicao and has only missed six games so far as he is depended on as Porto challenge for the title as well as looking to get far in the Champions League after qualifying for the round of 16.

Varela’s impressive form has clearly caught both Manchester City and Liverpool’s attention who will both be in the market in the future for a defensive midfielder.

Liverpool had a big rebuild in the summer but they were still trying to sign Moises Caicedo or Romeo Lavia after they signed Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister who are the two players who have played in the holding midfield role.

Manchester City have Rodri who is one of the best in the world in that position but they have just loaned Kalvin Phillips out to West Ham United and that deal could see Phillips join them permanently on the end of the season, therefore City may need to look for cover for Rodri.

According to the report Liverpool have been watching Varela for some time and it is no surprise that they want him having scouted him well since before his move to Europe.

It seems unlikely that either side will make a move during this window but Liverpool will have a space in the squad to fill once Thiago Alcantara’s contract is up so it could make sense for them to swoop in for Varela.

The one stumbling block for both sides could be the price as Porto do not want to sell him for lower than his release clause which is supposedly 70 million euros.
