Liverpool and Manchester City have recently been linked with a midfielder from the Portuguese league but now the pair are reportedly looking at Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich according to BILD.
The German international has been at Bayern Munich for nine years after he joined from RB Leipzig in 2015 but his contract is expiring next year and there is a chance that he could depart the club.
Liverpool had a big midfield rebuild in the summer as Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita left after winning plenty of major honours so they needed new signings.
Jurgen Klopp moved for four new midfielders with three of them coming from the Bundesliga, so the club would have potentially been aware of the situation that may have possibly unfolded with Kimmich.
He is regarded as one of the best midfielders in Europe and has been for many years as he was a key man for Bayern Munich when they won the treble in 2020 when they had current Liverpool player Thiago Alcantara.
The 28-year-old can also play as a right-back and took on the role to replacing Phillip Lahm who retired back in 2017 after a successful career at the German giants.
Manchester City could compete for the signature of Joshua Kimmich
The report suggests that Manchester City are the other side who are willing to sign him but they want him to join in the summer instead of letting his contract run out for another year.
Liverpool are also looking at signing him this summer as they look to bolster their midfield even further but the competition from the Premier League Champions as they look set to lose Kalvin Phillips permanently as they have loaned him out to West Ham with an obligation to buy.
The other big European side who are supposedly looking at him are Paris Saint-Germain as they have had a strong interest in him for a while and they may be in for a massive rebuild themselves if Kylian Mbappe does not decide to renew his contract at the club.
Klopp will know how talented he is due to how much a keen eye he has on the Bundesliga and with Thiago’s contract running out in the summer he may view him as a replacement due to the quality he has.
He has used Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister as the defensive midfielders so far this season but Mac Allister can play further forward so if Kimmich is signed he will allow the Argentinian World Cup winner more of a chance to play in different roles.
There has been no rumours of Kimmich possibly going into contract talks to renew his current deal so it is certainly a possible transfer saga which may play out amongst some of the biggest sides in Europe.
