Liverpool sold a couple of key players to the Saudi Arabian Pro League back last summer as a load of players renowned throughout Europe went to the Middle East.
Club captain Jordan Henderson joined Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq and Fabinho joined Al-Ahli making Liverpool need a full midfield rebuild.
However, after just six months there Henderson is looking to leave the country and return to Europe as he has not been impressed with things since joining.
This though hasn’t stopped Saudi clubs from looking to sign some of the best players in Europe as they continue to try and grow their league.
Al-Ettifaq have held discussions about Joel Matip
According to a recent report, Gerrard is looking at his old club again as he ponders about bringing in Liverpool defender Joel Matip.
The 32-year-old was wanted by the club last summer but Liverpool kept hold of him and he was looking like he would be the first choice for Jurgen Klopp to partner Virgil Van Dijk.
Unfortunately though he suffered a season ending injury in the dramatic 4-3 win over Fulham as he suffered a cruciate ligament tear.
His contract is up in the summer and Klopp was asked about whether the club would be willing to extend his deal expecting them to show their class.
Matip is deemed as one of the best free transfers that Liverpool have ever made as he has been one of the most important players under Klopp winning every trophy he possibly can.
So it would be a big loss for the club to lose a defender at the end of this season but there has been on contract negotiations as of yet.
Al-Ettifaq were also linked with Joe Gomez last summer and are still interested according to the report but he has arguably been one of Liverpool’s most impressive players this season so there is no chance he will be sold.
