Xabi Alonso has now responded to Jurgen Klopp’s announcement that he intends to leave Liverpool at the end of the season.
The Spaniard has been tipped for a move to the Anfield hotseat even before the announcement.
So naturally, Alonso has been at the forefront of people’s thoughts when pondering who will take over the reins on Merseyside.
Among the most obvious possibilities for the position is the Spanish manager.
His record at Bayer Leverkusen speaks for itself, and his team is still the only one in the Top 5 Leagues without a loss.
There are rumours of a secret exit clause in his contract that could allow him to join Liverpool if approached.
Speaking in his pre-Borussia Monchengladbach press conference, Alonso said:
“Speculation is normal, my focus is here on Bayer Leverkusen.”
“I am very happy at Leverkusen with my players at the moment.”
“I was surprised by Jurgen’s news. I have huge respect for Jurgen and Liverpool.
“At the moment I am really happy here and enjoying my work.”
“Each day and game is a challenge. We are in an intense and beautiful journey here at Leverkusen.”
When quizzed directly on whether he could rule himself out as Liverpool manager next season, he responded:
“Honestly… I don’t have a direct answer (laughs). I’m happy here right now, that’s for sure, and only thinking about Leverkusen”.
Xabi Alonso plays down links
It was predictably neutral and civil from Alonso, and we would expect no less from such a classy player and now manager.
However, Alonso will be focused on attempting bring the Bundesliga back to Leverkusen for the first time in the club’s history.
They currently sit atop the standings, with Bavarian giants Bayern Munich trailing by four points at this stage.
Despite all of his success at Leverkusen, he will no doubt be tempted with the role at Anfield.
He could definitely be one to keep an eye on in the summer.
