Liverpool have had a splendid season so far as they are still on course to at least challenge for every major honour available to them hence why it was such a shock that Jurgen Klopp announced that he would be leaving the club at the end of the campaign.

After a disappointing season last campaign Liverpool look like they are back to their normal standards of competing for every trophy under Klopp and some even thought it may convince him to sign a new contract.

However, that was obviously not the case as Klopp stated he does not have the energy to carry on after this season and that he needs to have a year break.

Several managers in the Premier League and across Europe reacted to the news as well with some giving different reactions to the news but the main sense was that everyone could not believe it especially due to the fact Klopp’s contract runs until 2026.

Klopp had told the owners about his decision back in November so the club will have been planning what to do for at least a couple of months now as several managers are starting to be linked with the job for the summer.

Liverpool have not approached any managers yet even though Xabi Alonso is main candidate

A recent report about the managerial situation at Liverpool has suggested that they have not main any moves for anyone yet as they assess all their options.

However they already have a frontrunner which is Xabi Alonso which is no real surprise to anyone due to how well he has been doing so far this season.

The former Liverpool man is a fan favourite after spending five years at the club and scoring a goal in one of the most famous games in the history of the club which was the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan.

At the moment he sits top of the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen who are undefeated as they look to try and topple Bayern Munich which for any manager would be a massive achievement which is ironically what Klopp got so much credit for before he joined Liverpool.

The reason no moves have been yet for Alonso yet is because Liverpool are not willing to rush into the decision as they will consider many options through a recruitment process.

Liverpool have had a shortlist since November but didn’t want to approach any targets before the Klopp news was public so now they are set to step up their search with the likes of Julian Nagelsmann, Roberto De Zerbi and Ange Postecoglou being looked at as well as Alonso.

The Reds will want to make sure they have everything sorted before the start of the summer so even though they do not want to rush they will know that they have to make a decision quickly on who to approach to to take over Klopp.
