Vincent Kompany names Liverpool player he would love to play alongside

Vincent Kompany helped Manchester City win several titles including the Premier League during his playing career.

Vincent Kompany has expressed his admiration for a Liverpool player whom he would love to have as a teammate, highlighting the player’s apparent lack of weaknesses.

Despite Liverpool’s recent dip in form, their overall season performance has been exceptional, with Jurgen Klopp’s side once eyeing a quadruple at one stage.

Ultimately, they will settle for the Carabao Cup, a triumph largely remembered for the outstanding display of Virgil van Dijk at Wembley.

Van Dijk, the Liverpool captain, not only scored the decisive goal against Chelsea but also led a team ravaged by injuries to an unlikely victory.

His performance served as a poignant reminder of his stature as one of the Premier League’s finest centre-backs.

In a Sky Sports interview where he was asked to assemble a seven-a-side team of modern greats, Burnley boss Kompany expressed his desire to have Van Dijk alongside him in defense, acknowledging the Dutchman’s credentials among the league’s defensive elite.

“I’d have to play with Virgil, yeah I think we would’ve been a good pairing,” Vincent Kompany said.

“Now, I couldn’t play with him, because I’d have to do all the running, but the younger version of him when he could’ve done the running for me.

“His understanding of the game, and obviously he’s able to back it up with the execution as well, but his understanding of the game, his leadership, his all-round profile as a defender I really think that it’s very rare, to have very few weaknesses.”

Virgil van Dijk has solidified his reputation as one of the best defenders in world football since his arrival at Liverpool FC in January 2018.

With Jordan Henderson’s departure in July 2023, Van Dijk was appointed as the new captain of the Reds, assuming leadership responsibilities for the team.

Throughout the current season, the Netherlands international has featured prominently for Liverpool, making 46 appearances, scoring four goals, and contributing two assists across all competitions.
