Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has lent his support to his teammate Darwin Nunez after the striker failed to score in what can be described as an action-packed but chaotic performance from the Uruguayan striker in last night’s clash with Leicester at Anfield.
The 23-year-old was bought by Liverpool last summer from Benfica for a total fee of £64 million and has divided opinion with his performances in the Premier League. The attacker is industrious and hard-working, continually creates chances for himself and his teammates and never lets defenders relax for a second.
However, Nunez can also be wasteful in front of goal and has squandered lots of good chances. The striker has a big chance conversion rate of less than 25% so far this season. Despite this, Nunez has scored a total of 9 goals and has assisted 5 times in all competitions this season so far, an admirable record for a young striker who is brand new to English football.
Nunez was extremely busy against Leicester and could have had 2 assists but also lacked some composure in front of goal.
Trent Alexander-Arnold spoke after the game in which he backed the Uruguayan to find consistent form in front of goal, heaping praise on his teammate.
Alexander-Arnold said, “I think I speak on behalf of all the lads: he’s been, I think, outstanding since he came in. People will judge him on his goals and that’s part of being a striker, that’s part of life. But I think he can keep walking off the pitch with his head held high because he is getting in positions that are really, really hurting the opposition”.
Alexander Arnold continued, “He’s such a threat, he’s getting in behind, he’s holding the ball up, he’s flicking balls on, he’s doing everything that the manager has asked of him. His pressing, his attitude, his desire, you can’t question any of it”.
“You’ll get people who will say he’s missed a few chances and he’s missed one-on-ones and maybe he should have tucked the second goal away, but he’s getting himself in those positions and when the goals do come I’m sure they will come like London buses! We’re just waiting for that but he’s a fantastic lad and he’s an outstanding player as well”.
