Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois spoke to the media after Madrid’s 5-2 victory at Anfield in the Champions League last night and gave his thoughts on the historic win.
Liverpool conceded 5 goals at home in a European fixture for the first time ever. Two braces from Vinicius Jr and Benzema and a goal from Militao sealed the victory for Los Blancos.
Courtois spoke to Movistar after the game:
“Madrid will always be in the fight until the end. I think that Liverpool is not the same team from last year, you have to be honest. They are more fragile at the back.”
“Madrid will always be one of the favourites (to win the Champions League). We’ll see how far we’ll go.”
Courtois made an error in the first half, when he misjudged a ball and gifted a goal to Mohamed Salah to make it 2-0. His teammates bailed the keeper out with 2 goals in the first half and the sides went in level.
“The truth is that it was a bit of bad luck screwing it up like that,” Courtois adds; explaining that most- uncharacteristic gaffe. “I controlled it well and at first, and I wanted to pass it.
“But I saw that Salah was standing still and I said; ‘Well, I’ll pass it to the right’. But it bounces off my knee (and into Salah’s path).”
Courtois was solid apart from his error. His performance in last year’s final against Liverpool is regarded as one of the best ever Champions League performances from a goalkeeper.
