Liverpool youngster Stefan Bajcetic made his first start in the Premier League in Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea at Anfield yesterday. Bajcetic did not look out of place whatsoever in Liverpool’s midfield and played with a calmness and control far beyond his years.
A precautious talent, for Bajcetic to perform that well against one of the biggest clubs in Europe bodes well for the Spaniard’s future at Liverpool.
Bajcetic picked up a booking and was eventually replaced around the 80-minute mark for Fabinho. The midfielder spoke to Liverpool’s website about the game and gave his thoughts on making his first start in the Premier League.
On when he found out he would start the game:
“I found out [on Friday]. Obviously we prepare for the game the day before and I found out, I was a bit shocked. I’m so happy to be here and to play and to help the team.”
Bajcetic spoke about his chemistry with Thiago in midfield and how he has helped the youngster settle in the first team.
“He’s always trying to help me and on the pitch he’s talking to me, encouraging me. It’s amazing to play with him and so easy as well.”
Bajcetic and Thiago playing in midfield together seems to have been destined as, amazingly, Bajcetic and Thiago’s fathers played together for Celta Vigo in 1996.
Liverpool fans are keenly aware of the team’s recent midfield issues and will be gladdened to see Bajcetic’s progress in the centre of the park. Jurgen Klopp needs options in that area of the pitch and Bajcetic put a strong case forward to be considered as a starter in more games going forward.
