Manager Jurgen Klopp has been discussing Stefan Bajcetic in his pre-Southampton press conference.

The talented teenager had break-out season last term as one of the few bright sparks in a largely disappointing 2022/23 season for the Reds.

Expectations were high this campaign to see how the 19-year-old would continue to progress in Klopp’s side.

He suffered an adductor over the summer that meant that he could not accompany the squad on pre-season tour.

The versatile midfielder made a brief return to the side for Liverpool’s away trip to Austrian side LASK in the Europa League group stages.

He also briefly featured off the bench against Leicester City in the third-round of the Carabao Cup at the tail end of September last year.

Unfortunately, he would suffer a further setback in the shape of a calf injury – which was enough to cause the Anfield staff to reassess things.

It’s believed that Bajcetic has been hard at work preparing his body for the rigors of men’s football at the highest level.

Still only 19, Jurgen Klopp hinted as much previously saying of the Spaniard’s continued absence:

Stefan’s quality, potential, talent, everybody could see and it’s incredible – what a player – but the body was not ready yet.

Now the Liverpool boss has provided a further update on the status of the teenager.

What did Jurgen Klopp say about Stefan Bajcetic?

Speaking in his pre-Southampton press conference, Jurgen Klopp revealed that Bajcetic is getting nearer to first team action:

“I had lunch here [at the AXA] and saw him training and sat there and though: ‘Why is he not playing?'”

“So, he is obviously gaining fitness now, he’s running around, he’s doing everything… but he didn’t get the greenlight for the team training.”

“There is nobody in this building that wants to hold him back so that might be some reasons for that.”

“He’s pain free, completely pain free which is obviously the most important thing.”

“All checks we made like scans – bone looks good so that’s all fine.”

So, it does look like Bajcetic will at least make a return before the end of the season.

The former Celta Vigo man has a bright future at Anfield and looked extremely mature in his performances last season despite his age.
