It was a record breaking evening for a certain Liverpool defender last night as Andrew Robertson broke the Premier League assists record for a defender.
Left back Robertson registered his 54th assist when he set up Mohamed Salah’s fifth minute opener against Aston Villa at Villa Park – overtaking previous record holder, Everton’s former left back Leighton Baines, in the process. The English Premier League was founded in 1992 and have been growing from strength to strength over the past 30 years. To hold that impressive achievement, with the number of high class defenders who have graced the Premier League over the years, is no small feat.
Robertson was signed by Liverpool in 2017 for an initial fee of £8m, a price that Robertson has paid back multiple times over. Not only has Robertson gone on to establish himself as the premier left back in the Premier League but you can argue that he and Trent Alexander-Arnold have redefined how full backs approach the game, with their attacking threat meaning they are just as much of a concern for opposing defenders as they are for opposing attackers.
If you’v been wondering who else makes up the top 10 of defenders with the most Premier League assists, have no fear. We’ve done the homework for you and listed them out below.
10. Kyle Walker
(Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City)
32 assists
9. Dan Petrescu
(Sheffield Wednesday, Chelsea, Bradford and Southampton)
33 assists
8. Gary Neville
(Manchester United)
35 assists
7. Cesar Azpilicueta
(Chelsea)
35 assists
6. Andy Hinchcliffe
(Everton and Sheffield Wednesday)
36 assists
5. Ian Harte
(Leeds United, Sunderland and Reading)

2. Leighton Baines
(Wigan and Everton)

1. Andrew Robertson

With two of the top three made up of current Liverpool players, we’re sure it won’t be long before the top two positions are filled with players from the red side of Merseyside. And with many more years ahead of them, Trent and Robertson can maybe put the record out of sight for defenders in the future.
We certainly wouldn’t bet against them.
