Rio Ferdinand believes Liverpool fans are wrong to compared new boy Dominik Szoboszlai to club legend Steven Gerrad.
The Hungarian arrived at Anfield in this past summer transfer window after triggering the £60m release clause in his RB Leipzig contract.
The 23-year-old has quickly become a starter in Jurgen Klopp’s side and has added some much-needed technical skills and legs into the Reds’ midfield.
Szoboszlai has managed four goals and three assists in 26 appearances across all competition.
However, he suffered a hamstring injury during Liverpool’s 4-2 victory over Newcastle United on New Years Day.
The man himself recently provided an injury update before receiving the Hungarian Sportsperson of the Year award.
Nonetheless, Rio Ferdinand believes that Liverpool’s No.8 is being overhyped.
What did Rio Ferdinand say?
Speaking on his YouTube channel Vibe with Five, the Manchester United legend said:
“I know everyone is hyping him, but I don’t think Dominik Szoboszlai has done (as well as people make out).”
“He’s a good player but people are saying ‘Oh, he’s the next [Steven] Gerrard!’ and I haven’t seen that yet.
“I see bare of their [fans’] comments. But one of my mates in my group always says it. But he is easy on the eye.”
It certainly is some strong words from Ferdinand, and seems largely unimpressed by Szoboszlai’s impact so far.
Dominik Szoboszlai has merited the praise he has received
We believe that the 23-year-old is fully deserving of the praise and Steven Gerrard comparisons he has received.
Szoboszlai has taken to the English Premier League and Liverpool Football Club like a duck to water.
Infact, so keenly has his impact been felt that it has led staff at Anfield to believe he is the most talented midfielder to play at LFC since Gerrard – as per our exclusive.
Statistically, he has been amongst the best midfielders in the league, especially with the long-term absence of Kevin De Bruyne
