Liverpool will be on the lookout for a new manager for the first time in nine years as Jurgen Klopp announced that he would be stepping down at the end of this current season.

As well as the assistant managers Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, as well as elite development coach Vitor Matos will all also be leaving the club meaning Liverpool are in for one massive reshuffle in the summer.

There has already been plenty of rumours about who could take over from Klopp with former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso being touted as the favourite to come in next season.

He has been doing very well so far this season in his first senior year in management as Bayer Leverkusen are top of the Bundesliga as they look to end Bayern Munich’s dominance of German football.

As well as Alonso Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi has been another name who has been linked due to his fine first season in England last season as he made The Seagulls qualify for Europe for the first time in their history.

The last name which has been briefly mentioned is current Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann but it seems that fans are keen on the idea of Alonso at the moment.

Rio Ferdinand gives his thoughts on Liverpool possibly appointing Xabi Alonso in the summer

Former Manchester United defender and current TNT sport pundit Rio Ferdinand has weighed in with his thoughts on the change of manager for Liverpool in the summer.

Speaking on his YouTube Ferdinand said: “If they announce quick, or before the end of the season, that Xabi Alonso is coming, and he’s just off the back of winning the German league with Leverkusen, unbeaten… whew.

“Whether he wins it or not though, Xabi Alonso, in this season, has done something that nobody has ever done in Germany halfway through.

“He plays good football. Xabi Alonso because of the whole history, he’s played for the club, they love him there, the brand of football he’s playing.

“He’s only been in it a little while, which is the risk, he hasn’t got the experience.”

Alonso has won many plaudits and due to the fact he is already loved at Anfield there is feeling that he would be the most suitable pick.

There are also some similarities with how he likes to play football to Klopp as well as the fact the German was the last one to topple Bayern Munich so that would also be a massive similarity from the pair should Alonso go onto win the title.

As well as that though Leverkusen are in the round of 16 of the Europa League, like Liverpool, and they are still in the DFB Pokal so a treble is still on in only his first season of management at a senior level.
