Liverpool were heavily linked with OGC Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo early last summer.
Despite interest from Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester United, Todibo ultimately stayed put last summer and did not leave France.
Fabrizio Romano reported last May that scouts from the aforementioned Premier League clubs attended a Ligue 1 fixture between Rennes and Nice to scout the Frenchman.
Since his profile increased as a result of Premier League interest last summer, the defender has garnered the attention of several top clubs in Europe over the last few months.
Nizaar Kinsella of the Evening Standard reports that Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race for Todibo as they prioritise a centre-back signing in January.
According to the report, the 23-year-old is valued at around £39 million by the French side.
Kinsella states: “Spurs are desperate for defensive reinforcements and are ready to rival Manchester United and Liverpool for France international Todibo.”
With the hamstring injury sustained by Mickey van de Ven, Spurs have been pushed into adding a defender in the upcoming transfer window.
Most Liverpool supporters agree that a centre-back signing has been needed for some time but there was an understanding among the fanbase that the midfield rebuild was the priority last summer.
The signings of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch left little room for the purchase of a defender.
The rise of youngster Jarell Quansah to the first team has been encouraging but it is important that Quansah is not put under too much pressure to deliver whenever an opportunity arises.
For this reason, the signing of a prime age centre-back like Todibo would make sense. However, it remains to be seen if Liverpool will be moved by Tottenham’s interest.
