Liverpool are set overhaul their defense in the summer, with Joel Matip and Joe Gomez rumored to be in the departure lounge.

The reliable Jacque Talbot of Football Transfers reports that Benfica defender Antonio Silva is on Liverpool’s wishlist. At just 19-years-old, Silva has become a regular in the heart of Benfica’s defense, making 27 appearances in all competitions. At 19, to play so many games as a centre-back for one of Europe’s biggest clubs is a remarkable achievement.

Fabrizio Romano also reported today that Liverpool could look to add a centre-back in the summer.

Silva is a product of Benfica’s academy, which has produced such stars as Joao Felix, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva.

Manchester United and Chelsea are also said to be interested in Silva, who is estimated to be valued at around €80-90 million.

Benfica manager Roger Schmidt said of the young defender, “He doesn’t look (his) age. It was obvious in pre-season that he is a talented player and that he is already a professional player who is able to withstand the pressure playing for the Benfica first team, and he has shown it many times this season.”

Silva has earned two Primeira Liga Defender of the Month awards this season. With his remarkable potential and wealth of top-flight of experience at such a young age, it is easy to understand why some of Europe’s biggest clubs want the young defender. A manager could build their defense around Silva for many years to come.
