Former Leicester City defender Çağlar Söyüncü rejected approaches from Liverpool and Newcastle in favour of a move to Atletico Madrid, a new report has claimed.
Söyüncü departed Leicester during the summer as a free agent after five years with the club. The 27-year-old had almost 100 appearances for the Foxes in that time.
A new report from Mundo Deportivo via the Liverpool ECHO, claims that both Liverpool and Newcastle were interested in acquiring the Turkish international upon the expiration of his Leicester contract.
Talks between Söyüncü’s camp and the two Premier League clubs reportedly took place but the player instead chose a move to La Liga.
While signing the Turkish international on a free transfer would appear a shrewd bit of business at an initial glance, some may argue that a club of Liverpool’s stature and prestige should be aiming a bit higher than acquiring a free agent from a relegated club.
