Liverpool today announced that Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that he will be stepping down as the manager at the end of this season.
A short video was released on their social media in the morning of Klopp announcing why and then a further 25-minute interview of the German coach further explaining his decision was released by the club.
Then in the afternoon, a special press conference was held so Klopp could answer questions from the media about the decision but he stated that he would prefer to talk about Liverpool’s next game in the FA Cup fourth round against Norwich City.
Several managers in the Premier League and across Europe reacted to the news as well with former Liverpool player Xabi Alonso admitting that he was surprised that Klopp would be leaving Liverpool after nine years.
One of Klopp’s greatest rivals throughout his career, Pep Guardiola, did not have a press conference due to the fact his Manchester City side had a game against Tottenham Hotspur in the evening but he has now reacted to the news.
Pep Guardiola has his say on Jurgen Klopp calling an end to his Liverpool career
After Manchester City’s win against Spurs thanks to a goal from Nathan Ake to get through the FA Cup fourth round Guardiola took some time to share his thoughts about his respected rival.
He said: “I will sleep better!
“The day before playing Liverpool, it was always a nightmare. We cannot define our period here without him, without Liverpool. The best rival I have ever had in my life.
”Of course I wish him all the best. He will not admit it but he will be back, I know it. Maybe in 10 years time.
“Football needs personalities and managers like him. Hopefully next year we can go for dinner together.”
The pair of managers are set to have another classic battle for the Premier League title race this season with the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Aston Villa involved.
Whether Guardiola will be at City for another long period is unknown but one of the best rivalries in the Premier League era is certainly coming to an end.
Gurdiola and Klopp will have one last game against each other in the Premier League as Liverpool host Manchester City in what could be a massive game in the title race.
They may even come up against each other in the future with a one year break being confirmed by Klopp but there has been plenty of rumours in the past that he may take over the German national side and international management is something Guardiola is yet to take part in.?
