Labelled as one of Argentina’s hottest prospects, the young midfielder has attracted Liverpool as a potential suitor this summer.
Newcastle United and Barcelona, however, have also been monitoring the 21-year-old throughout his season in Argentina, according to FootballInsider.
Alan Varela was subject to interest in January, with relegation strugglers Bournemouth an interested party, but the deal eventually amounted to nothing.
Benfica were also looking to replace their star midfield Enzo Fernandez, who moved to Chelsea and were reportedly looking to bring in Varela as a direct replacement.
He would certainly be a cheap option for Jurgen Klopp ahead amid a busy summer, and his interest is genuine considering both he and the Newcastle entourage have dispatched scouts to watch Varela.
Varela is eager to expand his CV with a move to the Premier League his most preferable so the battle for his signature may heat up when the time comes.
He appeals to Liverpool as he is young and has received a lot of hype for his performances, and with ample midfield outgoings expected at Anfield, this wouldn’t be a bad move.
Varela penned a new contract with his current club Boca Juniors in the summer just gone, but a bid of around £16-20m is likely too tempting for the Argentinian giants to deny.
