By now, we are all aware that Liverpool likely hold some sort of interest in Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.

The 26-year-old Dutchman has been growing a steady reputation since his move to Bergamo, having shone with boyhood club AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie.

Since the start of the new year (and well before that as well), numerous reports from Italy have frequently linked the Dutch international with Liverpool.

The 26-year-old has had a standout season at Atalanta, contributing 15 goals and six assists in 45 games across all competitions.

Koopmeiners is known for his adaptability, having the ability to fill various midfield roles and even stepping into the center back position during his tenure at AZ Alkmaar.

Despite Jurgen Klopp bolstering his midfield options last summer, there continues to be ongoing speculation about the need for a dedicated ‘No.6’.

However, this season Koopmeiners has been playing further forward showcasing his talents as a goal threat from midfield.

Juventus has long been interested in Koopmeiners and are concerned that Liverpool might be able to outspend them if a bidding war for the player ensues.

And it seems that the situation could heat up this week judging from the latest reports from Italy.

Agent of Teun Koopmeiners to meet with ‘concerned clubs’ this week

TuttoAtalanta have come out with a report detailing the interest in Koopmeiners – particularly from the likes of Juventus and Liverpool.

Cristiano Giuntoli, Juventus technical director, is believed to be a big fan of the Dutch international, with Giuntoli following him while being the sporting director at Napoli.

According to the report, Koopmeiners’ representative Bart Bavin is set to travel to Italy to attend the Europa League semi-final second leg between Atalanta and Marseille on Thursday night.

While the match is the immediate focus, it’s anticipated that discussions regarding Koopmeiners’ future will also take place.

The visit is expected to involve more than just watching the game, with scheduled meetings with the relevant clubs – suggesting Liverpool is a relevant club.

However, there is a caveat, with TuttoAtalanta writing:

“While Juventus position themselves as favourites, Liverpool remain a serious threat.”

“The Reds have already explored the possibility of signing Koopmeiners and could intensify their interest.”

“The Dutchman, however, would show a preference for Serie A, if the economic conditions were equivalent.”

If Liverpool were to do a deal for Koopmeiners, they should be weary.

Koopmeiners is a crucial cog in manager’s Gian Piero Gasperini’s setup with Atalanta so he will likely cost something close to what has been reported.

The Bergamo side have been very savvy in the transfer market in recent years and are growing a reputation as a feeder to the biggest clubs in Europe.

Just this past summer, they sold Rasmus Højlund to Manchester United for a whopping €74 million.

They also sold Cristian Romero to Tottenham for €50 million in the summer of 2022.

It’s then fair to say that Atalanta will be tough negotiators if the Reds do come calling in the summer.
