Liverpool are looking to strengthen their midfield as they reportedly keep a close eye on Argentina star Enzo Fernandez. The 21-year-old played a pivotal role in last night’s win over Mexico. He scored with a curling effort into the top corner in the 87th minute. It was his first goal for the Argentinian senior side.
Fernandez signed for Portuguese giants Benfica for a fee of £15.5million in the summer from Argentinian champions River Plate. He has had a positive start to his new life in the Portuguese capital scoring on his debut with a half-volley against FC Midtjylland. His goal helped Benfica seal qualification for the group stages of the competition.
He was named the August Player Of The Month in his first month at the club. Lionel Messi has described Fernandez as a ‘’spectacular player’’ after his side’s victory over Mexico.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo Argentinian journalist Bruno Gonzalez Garcia compares Fernandez to Thiago Alcantara ‘he is a boy who in a few years of his career has already shown that he can adapt to different teams in different realities: Defense and Justice, River, Benfica, Argentina. There are four totally different realities and Enzo managed to stand out in each one. Liverpool have a coach who not only trains, but also teaches and educates, and that is fundamental for a youngster, even more so if that youngster is open to learning as in this case.’’
Three midfielders are set to depart Liverpool in the summer. James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita are all expected to leave the club. Loanee Arthur Melo will return to his parent club Juventus after an injury-ravaged spell with Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp seems to have accepted that Liverpool will have to spend big to compete with other Premier League rivals this summer.
Klopp: “How we did it so far (transfer business) brought us to where we are, fine, but fresh money is no mistake, let me say it like this.”

Fernandez has 8 goal contributions in 24 games for Benfica this season, scoring 3 goals and creating 5 others. Fernandez could be the type of signing Klopp needs to make to propel Liverpool back to title challengers.
Enzo Fernandez’s release clause is £105 million meaning Liverpool would have to break their transfer record once again in order to sign Fernandez. Benfica would be the beneficiaries of Liverpool’s new method of transfer business for the second time in 12 months.
