Jurgen Klopp spoke to beIN Sports after Liverpool’s horrendous 5-2 home defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League last 16.

It was strange game as the Reds blitzed Madrid in the first 20 mins, scored two goals early on. But Madrid’s Champions League pedigree shone through when Carlo Ancelloti’s side responded with 2 goals before half-time.

Militao made it 3-2 at the beginning of the second half and Real began to run away with it. 2 more goals sealed a historic 5-2 victory, the first time Liverpool have conceded 5 goals at home in a European fixture.

Jurgen Klopp tried to sum up the loss in his post-match interview. The German was asked about the defeat possibly damaging the confidence the Reds have built up over their last two Premier League wins against Everton and Newcastle.

That’s not allowed, that’s not allowed,” Klopp said.

“I understand that, but I told the boys already, it was a massive knock. We wanted to win the game and we lost it 5-2. How can you think no problem? Nobody thinks that. But a defeat is only a defeat if you don’t learn from it properly.

“And if we don’t learn tonight that the first half was outstanding, apart from two moments, then we are dumb to be honest. That’s what we have to keep on doing.
