The Reds have turned their attention to improving their ageing midfield department as they set to embark on a damning squad overhaul this summer.

According to Ben Jacobs, however, Liverpool are still hugely interested in signing Croatian centre-back Josko Gvardiol as part of their much-needed revamp.

The Merseyside club have struggled on multiple fronts this campaign and a centre-back addition could be required if Joel Matip departs the club.

The 31-year-old’s contract with Liverpool expires at the end of the season.

Gvardiol has been serially linked to joining Jurgen Klopp on Merseyside after his stock increased rapidly following the youngster’s superb account in Qatar.

Winning 19 caps for his nation and becoming an indispensable asset to German club RB Leipzig, there’s no wonder that he is so highly thought of.

Jacobs spoke to GiveMeSport and revealed the latest on the Reds’ hot pursuit of the sought-after youngster.

“Gvardiol is one of the names on Liverpool’s list for sure, and they’ve been tracking him very seriously over the course of the last few months.”

Liverpool supporters have been dealt a blow in their race to sign Englishman Jude Bellingham as The Athletic have reported the unlikely nature of the deal happening.

He would slot into the heart of the defence with ease and would be the perfect long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk, who is enduring a challenging time at Liverpool this season.

Hailed as the ‘best central defender in the world’ by his fellow countryman and manager Zlatko Dalic shows the influence he’s had on the world of Croatian football.

Whoever manages to secure him in the summer, if he was to leave, would be signing a generational talent, and Liverpool will want to be the ones to get him.
