Xabi Alonso has emerged as one of the early front runners in the discussion on who will succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
His impact and body of work at Bayer Leverkusen means that he is one of the most coveted managers in the world at present.
The Spaniard’s side are top of the Bundesliga and are still yet to lose a game this season as we enter February.
Leverkusen are showing attacking and free-flowing football, with wingbacks Jeremie Frimpong and Alex Grimaldo enjoying their best ever seasons under Alonso.
Jurgen Klopp shocked the world on Friday morning when he announced his intention to step down as Liverpool manager come end of the season.
The announcement devastated Reds fans around the world as Klopp is widely regarded as one of the best managers in world football.
However, the Anfield club will have to start to plan for life without the German, who easily the best and most-loved Liverpool manager in Premier League history.
Back in 2018, also speaking with Guillem Balague, Alonso spoke on the prospect of managing Liverpool, saying:
“I first have to prove myself and to prepare. If I decide somewhere along the way to take my chance as a manager, then you know my link, my commitment, my passion for Liverpool.”
“Why not… we will see if we can cross paths in our ways!”
The former Liverpool man has certainly proved himself so far, with Leverkusen just about the most in-form team in the world for most of the season now.
Now Balague has provided his own update on how he sees Liverpool and Xabi Alonso ‘crossing paths’.
What was said on Xabi Alonso?
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the Spanish journalist explained
“Xabi Alonso is doing a fantastic job at Bayer Leverkusen – based on what he learned at the reserve team of Real Sociedad.”
“Those years were like a master’s at university, a PhD in football.”
“He was convinced at that point, at the end of his tenure with the Sociedad reserves, he was ready for any job thrown into him.”
“But there was a jump between the biggest dream, and the 2nd and 3rd tier of Spanish football.”
“Bayer Leverkusen was chosen, he had a lot of offers but he chose Leverkusen.”
“How has he managed to do so well? Based on identification of the problems, tactical flexibility, he won everyone over because of who he is.”
“He identified very quickly that the team was conceding too many goals and didn’t control the games.”
“Once he got the players that he needed to improve Bayer Leverkusen , you can see the consequences- top of the Bundesliga.”
“When he moved to Bayer Leverkusen, he had an idea. If it goes well in Germany then [he would look at] Bayern Munich, Liverpool, or Real Madrid.”
Xabi Alonso is on track
It then seems like the former Liverpool midfielder is on track with his goals for leaning and improving himself for a ‘bigger’ job.
He has demonstrated his managerial abilities in the Bundesliga after leaving the reserves at Real Sociedad.
It feels like Liverpool and Xabi Alonso could ‘cross paths’ with Liverpool needing a manager and perhaps Alonso looking for that step up.
Nonetheless, it will be very interesting times ahead for Liverpool fans as the Anfield hierarchy continue to do their due diligence over a new manager for next season.
