Steven Gerrard was wanted by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2004 when the former Liverpool man was being courted by Chelsea.
Gary Neville has speaking in the Stick to Football podcast when he revealed that Sir Alex wanted to bring the midfielder to Old Trafford.
When recalling what happened all almost 20 years ago now, the Sky Sports pundit said:
“I have just remembered when Sir Alex asked me.. when I went into his room with England and asked him to sign for United.”
“I felt as though it was a bit of a hopeless [case].”
“What would it have been, 2004? He was close to going to Chelsea and Sir Alex rang me and said he’s anxious.”
“I think his words were ‘Tell him I’ll fetch him and take him back down the East Lancs and bring him back’.”
“I went to see Stevie and he was quite categoric quite quickly!
“He said ‘Seriously, I wouldn’t get out of Liverpool and my family would never get out of Liverpool’”.
“Those were his exact words to me.”
It goes to show how highly-rated Gerrard was during his pomp, as both Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex were keen on him.
Additionally, both managers already had Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes respectively, but they still wanted Gerrard.
Paul Scholes has already admitted that he could not do what Gerrard did at Liverpool.
Nonetheless, Steven Gerrard opted to stay put and become a club legend at his boyhood club.
