Gary Neville has made a sensational claim suggesting that Tottenham can finish above the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool season.
The former Red Devil believes that Ange Postecoglou’s side will finish in the top four granted all of their players stay fit.
The North London club managed a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford despite many key absentees including Son Heung-min, Pape Sarr, Yves Bissouma, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski.
Those are not their only unavailable players, with Ben Davies, Giovani Lo Celso and Ivan Perisic among the notable misses.
After their stalemate with Manchester United, Spurs are now fifth in the table, five points behind league leaders Liverpool albeit having played a game more.
However, the Lily Whites have had their inconsistent spells this season when they failed to win one Premier League game in November.
Nonetheless, Postecoglou seems a perfect fit for the North London club, and the rapid improvement in both playstyle and results have admittedly been impressive.
What did Gary Neville say about Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool?
Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville claimed that Spurs could be better than Liverpool or Arsenal:
“If they keep their players fit, they are a certainty to finish in the top four.”
“I think they can get to second and third [in the table].”
“With those players back, and if they can get through these next few weeks, I genuinely think they can be better than Arsenal and Liverpool this season.”
Spurs’ next face Manchester City in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday 26 January.
Neville believes that an early dismissal at the hands of the Cityzens could be beneficial for Spurs’ season:
“It might end up being a good draw in the FA Cup against Manchester City. Go out of that and concentrate completely on the league. But they do need to win a trophy.”
“If he wins a trophy, great, but we know in the past when teams have had a really explosive season, they’re not usually in Europe or [in other] competitions.”
“For Ange Postecoglou to get to second or third, which they could do if they have a clean run at it, would be something special.”
Neville just doesn’t get it
There is no doubt that Liverpool and Manchester City will finish 1st and 2nd respectively, it’s just in what order the pair place in.
Neville has seen firsthand the multiple, record-breaking title races between Liverpool and Manchester City.
The Reds still have a core group of players that won the Champions League and Premier League over a two-year period.
Pep Guardiola even went on record to highlight the threat Liverpool pose this season, saying:
“We have a big rival, Liverpool is back.”
Meanwhile arguably the most important player to Manchester City, Rodri, also echoed his managers sentiments, saying:
“If you ask me, our real contenders are Liverpool because they have the experience of winning in the last years.”
So, Neville can continue saying whatever he wants, but the reigning champions know exactly who they have to beat for an unprecedented fourth consecutive title this season.
