Liverpool are in search for several midfielders this summer and have been linked to a host of players across Europe.

Last summer, the Reds came close to signing French midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, who played for Monaco at the time.

Real Madrid ultimately swooped in and signed Tchouameni before the end of the window. Liverpool had devoted several months into the pursuit of Tchouameni and were forced to scramble for alternatives before the end of the window.

Liverpool ended up signing Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus in what was somewhat of a panic buy that has not paid off at all. Melo has made one competitive appearance for the Reds during his loan spell.

Fabrizio Romano reported today that Liverpool are still very much interested in Tchouameni, who has not had the perfect debut season at Real Madrid.

On the Here We Go podcast, the topic of Tchouameni possibly leaving Real Madrid came up.

Romano refuted the idea, however, but acknowledged that Liverpool still really like Tchouameni.

“Liverpool really tried to sign Tchouameni, they were upset with that deal. Klopp called the player multiple times, but the player joined Real Madrid. This summer I don’t see Madrid changing a lot in midfield.

“They have Kroos who signed a contract, Modric will discuss an extension too. I think Tchouameni is going to stay, and for Liverpool there will be other targets. Liverpool still love Tchouameni, but they know he is unavailable,” Romano said.
