As Mohamed Salah took over Robbie Fowler as Liverpool’s all-time top goal scorer, the debates began doing the rounds of where the Egyptian places in Liverpool’s best ever players.
Kenny Dalglish, speaking to liverpoolfc.com, has chipped in to hail the achievement but also to remind supporters there is another man who is ‘equally important’.
The Liverpool legend spoke about the standards Alisson has kept high and how his influence is on the same level as Liverpool’s record-breaker Salah.
“Every achievement by any individual should never be undermined or overlooked. It’s a fantastic achievement and he’s done it in a short space of time, shorter than maybe Robbie did,” said the Scotsman.
“The most important thing is the individual awards are brilliant but you can’t beat the team awards. Within the success of the team, there’s always individuals [who] make contributions. A goal at one end, it’s equally as important that Alisson saves another one at the other end, or the defender kicks one off the line.” he added.
Out of all the players, Alisson is one of a select few who can hold their head high after Liverpool’s dismal start to the 2022/23 campaign.
Without their Brazilian man between the sticks, what has been a bad season could have been even worse if someone else had to deputise.
His input has been invaluable and at times, he has kept his side in games but purely keeping the score down – this is a very important attribute to have in such an important player.
Dalglish spoke about football being a team sport and placed high importance of not conceding goals.
“So, everybody’s got their part to play. Without everybody performing for the team, there’s no way that you’re going to be successful just by scoring goals. But you also have to be successful in not letting in goals. But it’s fantastic for Mo, [he’s] been a great servant to the club and long may it continue.”
Both players have been key to Jurgen Klopp throughout the years, and this season has been no different.
As Liverpool look towards Champions League qualification for next term, the hopes that Mohamed Salah continues to have the bit between his teeth and Alisson will continue to be one of the best goalkeepers on the planet rise.
