Now-pundit Paul Merson has been thoroughly impressed with Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic, who is reportedly a target for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
Graeme Bailey spoke on 90mins’ Talking Transfers podcast and mentioned that Liverpool ‘appreciate’ the Chelsea midfield maestro and may make a move for him in the summer.
He wrote in his column for Sky Sports: “Chelsea are a dangerous animal, they’ve got some unbelievable players and they just need to click – at times against Leicester they did.
“Mateo Kovacic has come back recently. I’m a massive fan of him, and playing alongside Enzo Fernandez in midfield.” Merson said.
The 28-year-old is currently under Graham Potter’s watch but is out of contract new summer, but Bailey revealed that Chelsea will want his wages of the books.
This will allow clubs to get Kovacic for a cut price, seeing as the West Londoners are willing to get rid to free up some funds.
The Croatian international is a well-rounded player that would slot right into Klopp’s engine rooms and would be welcomed as part of the Red’s refurbishment this summer.
Although this transfer is highly unlikely to happen as the two parties are top-four rivals and Potter’s reluctance to sell, there would be complaints for a Reds supporter if it came to fruition.
Liverpool are, however, likely to stay well away as they will be looking to bring in younger midfield options with more years in the tank as they begin to seek long-term solutions for this season’s woes.
