The Athletic’s David Ornstein was on Sky Sports News last night in the aftermath of Liverpool’s defeat to Real Madrid and discussed the ownership situation at the club.
Ornstein followed up comments from John Henry and confirmed that Fenway Sports Group are going to be in charge for a while longer.
Speaking on the TV station Ornstein said, “Depending on which side of the fence you sit on, if you want FSG for longer, that looks like that’s going to happen; if you don’t, you will be a bit disappointed.
“FSG did put Liverpool up for sale, we never knew how it was going to end and we stated that in reporting at the time, and it seems that there haven’t been the offers that they might have been hoping.
“I’m sure that’s been influenced by Manchester United going on the market, and also results like tonight [against Real Madrid] don’t help their cause.”
The interesting point to note is that Ornstein states that FSG DID have Liverpool up for sale. Now that they’ve taken that idea off the table, Reds fans will be looking to see whether FSG are going to putting their hands in their pockets to support Jurgen Klopp in the summer.
Last nights performance proved that Liverpool need serious reinvestment in the playing squad, with fans and observers looking at how much FSG back their manager with the funds to rebuild the squad.
Otherwise, it’s highly likely that the atmosphere around the ownership could turn sour if the owners allow the current situation to continue for much longer.
