The two European stalwarts square up in the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie, and one Spanish outlet believes it could be Jurgen Klopp’s audition to be Carlo Ancelotti’s successor.
Ancelotti’s contract with Real Madrid expires in 2024, and the German coach has been rumoured to be the potential candidate to take over at the helm in the Spanish capital.
A recent report from El Nacional also reported that the Madrid-based side made their first contact with the 55-year-old for his services.
According to Defensa Central, ‘his future on the bench could directly depend on his performance’ on Wednesday, with Klopp ‘one of the many names that sound like a possible Real Madrid coach’ and the Spanish giants set to ‘take into account his performance at the Bernabéu’.
‘Klopp will try to leave a good image in a historic setting in the competition and, above all, in front of Florentino Pérez. This would be a great letter of introduction for him, despite the fact that he is already a well-known coach in the world of football.’ the report added.
‘It’s also claimed that the 55-year-old has ‘always been valued in the Spanish capital’, but the opportunity for him to manage Los Blancos ‘never came to be given’.
Granted, the likelihood of Klopp jumping ship to Spain is unlikely, given the Merseysiders are eyeing up a new era with their squad overhaul this summer a starting point.
Klopp has taken his Liverpool team to the heights of club football, with a Champions League and Premier League under his belt.
Many successful years later and a complete change in identity for Liverpool, and supporters of the club are urging Klopp to remain in charge after the success he has succumbed over the years.
This campaign has largely been an anomaly and one that Klopp won’t be best pleased with as he is used to gunning for multiple pieces of silverware.
That would be a possibility with Madrid seeing as they are always fighting to be the best team in Spain and always there or there abouts in Europe.
