Athletic Bilbao to sign talented Liverpool youngster

With the competition for places so fierce, this offer tempted the club enough to let the player go.

It seems that Ben Doak’s emergence at Liverpool has claimed its first casualty in the youth ranks. The Athletic are reporting that Athletic Bilbao are set to sign talented Liverpool youngster Elijah Gift in the summer for a fee of around £1m.

Gift has impressed for Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s under-18s team as a first-year scholar this season and the publication mentions that Liverpool didn’t want to lose the player. However, with the competition for places at the top end of the field so fierce, this offer tempted the club enough to let the player go.

Gift, who turns 17 next month, was born in the town of Corella in the Basque Country – hence the interest from Athletic Bilbao, who have a policy where only those native to the Basque Country are eligible to play for the club. With Gift’s heritage, it makes him a good fit for the Spanish La Liga side.

Joining from Huddersfield Town in 2017, Gift has been honing his skills in the young team ranks with The Reds over the past few years. While the departure of any young player always hurts, Liverpool are definitely stocked well in that department with Doak being at the forefront of youngsters expected to break through to the first team regularly soon.

This report has also been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, who took to Twitter to share that Gift is set to undergo a medical in Spain and set to sign a long term deal with Athletic.
