Xabi Alonso has had a bright start to his new managerial venture in the Bundesliga at Bayern Leverkusen. Before the former Reds midfielder took over the German side, replacing Gerard Seoane in October, Leverkusen where sitting in the relegation zone in 17th place

This was Leverkusen’s worst-ever start to the Bundesliga. It included losing four out of five games. Since then, Alonso has helped Die Werkself climb up to 11th place and advance into the last 16 of the Europa League after defeating Monaco 5-3 in a penalty shootout.

Xabi Alonso won 4 major honours during his 6 years at Liverpool. Including the famous European Cup win in May 2005 in Istanbul. During that time, Alonso made an effective midfield partnership with the well-respected Anfield figure Steven Gerrard. Many fans and Liverpool’s current manager Jurgen Klopp said they would love to see Gerrard at the helm for the Reds once Klopp’s time is up. Sadly for the former Liverpool captain, he most go out and prove himself again before he is considered suitable for the role. So who knows? If Xabi Alonso keeps doing the right things and progresses further in the managerial world, maybe one day we could see a different former Liverpool midfielder as the Reds’ manager than the one punted by many.
