Thiago Alcantara has suffered a fresh injury setback after making his return from lengthy spell out against Arsenal.
It is reported that the 32-year-old picked up a muscle injury in his short cameo at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Thiago suffered a fresh setback during his brief appearance and now faces a further period out of the team.
This is according to Paul Joyce of the Times.
Jürgen Klopp will not be happy with the absence of the 32-year-old, who is in the last year of his contract at Anfield.
The German had been hoping to use the playmaker’s influence as Liverpool battles on four fronts in the final stretch.
The Spaniard made his first Reds appearance after 284 days when he came off the bench against the Gunners.
He had been out with a complex hip issue that required surgery over the summer.
Despite his obvious quality and ability, consistent injury problems have disrupted his flow on Merseyside.
However, he’s still managed to make almost 100 appearances for Liverpool in this time.
Growing injury list again with Thiago Alcantara added
Thiago joins the ranks of Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah in being senior players Klopp would rather have heading into a critical stage of the season.
With the Spaniard’s contract expiring at the end of the season, it’s highly unlikely the Anfield hierarchy offer him a new deal.
There was hope that the former Bayern Munich man could return strongly for the business end of the season.
However, it now seems that it could be a difficult ask for the 32-year-old to play a big part in the season.
The timely return of Wataru Endo is a welcome boost to the German manager.
This is in light of Thiago’s continued injury troubles.
Japan were knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Asia Cup at hands of Iran on Saturday.
Endo was spotted at the AXA training Centre yesterday.
There is hope he can continue in the same vein form he was in before his departure to Qatar.
The Japan international will have to step up in the absence of Thiago and Szoboszlai.
