Liverpool underwent something of a rebuild over the course of last summer. The Reds made four additions to their engine room – bringing in the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo.

This helped completely transformed the look of the midfield as the club said goodbye to the likes of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner and many more midfielders.

Out of all those signings, the biggest, most expensive and most high-profile was Dominik Szoboszlai.

Signed for £60m after the Reds triggered his release clause, Szoboszlai was seen by many as the new face of the Liverpool midfield. Having made a name for himself already at the likes of Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig, Szoboszlai was also Hungary national team captain and seen as one of the most exciting midfielders in Europe.

With Alexis Mac Allister having moved to Anfield around a month earlier, there was genuine excitement as to what this new combination could bring to the middle of the park.

Jurgen Klopp would have been delighted to see how efficiently Liverpool had rebuilt the midfield in one summer – something that usually takes clubs many transfer windows to get right.

Although Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch were brought in more for squad depth when first signed, the Japan captain has made himself a staple in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The 31-year-old has had a solid season despite having a rocky start initially. He himself even admitted that “everything” was different in the Premier League compared to the Bundesliga.

However, although Endo was managed to go from strength to strength as the season has worn on, the same cannot be said about Dominik Szoboszlai.

After starting the campaign like a house on fire, Szoboszlai’s form has slowly dipped. Liverpool fans have noticed a remarkable downturn in performances from the Hungarian, especially since the turn of the year.

It’s even led to Szoboszlai speaking about his struggles at Anfield with the Hungarian FA’s official YouTube channel.

Despite this downturn in form, it’s clear from what we’ve seen of Szoboszlai that there’s still an immense there. And the summer arrival of Arne Slot could just be the impetus that Szoboszlai needs to kick on.
