
Today marks the 5th anniversary of Virgil Van Dijk’s debut for Liverpool FC. The Dutchman had a dream start to life at Anfield by scoring the winning goal with a brilliant header in the 84th minute against Everton.

A lot more was to come in Van Dijk’s magnificent career for Liverpool.
He quickly became a fan favourite with his outstanding defensive performances as it was no secret Liverpool were struggling at the back before his arrival.
He brought grit and strength to the Liverpool backline. With his arrival, all of a sudden Liverpool fans felt the opposition would struggle to score.
Many people in the world of football were questioning Van Dijk’s price tag of £75 million from Southampton. It has proven to be a great purchase by the Reds.
At the time, the transfer made Van Dijk the most expensive defender of all time. Many honours have followed – such as the Champions League, European Super Cup, Club World Cup, League Cup, FA Cup, and that coveted Premier League title.
He was named UEFA mens’ Player of the Year, PFA player’s Player of the Year, Premier League Player of the year, 4x PFA team of the year. £75 million? Sounds cheap now.
He’s certainly cemented his name amongst the great Liverpool defenders such as Ron Yeats, Alan Hansen, Sami Hyypia, and many more.
Liverpool fans will hope the big centre-half can find his best form again. He has been an incredible signing for the Reds.
